Gordon Smith: More War?
United States Sen. Gordon Smith (R-OR) just can't get enough of war presidents.
After nearly seven violent, disastrous years under President Bush, Smith is pushing for four more under U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).
McCain, who along with Bush is the most unyielding proponent of staying in Iraq, is Smith's choice for president.
Where do Smith and McCain want to take us next? Watch the video:
Although Oregonians oppose the war, Smith has voted more than 20 times to authorize and fund it – including twice in May – and thinks the war's most intractable U.S. Senate proponent is a good fit for president.
"A John McCain presidency would lead us to endless losses in Iraq and potential armed conflict with Iran. The only Oregonian who endorses that direction is Gordon Smith," DPO Chair Meredith Wood Smith said. "Smith could stand up for Oregon values and endorse a different candidate, or he could withhold endorsement. Instead, he stands steadfastly by McCain's misguided military missions."

Excellent video.
Smith (and this Administration) need to be held accountable for their actions.
How convenient that he is (allegedly) opposing the war now that public sentiment has changed and he's up for re-election.
I'll bet Smith ends up voting against his own legislation - on some baloney technicality. Hoping, as always, that the general population is only paying cursory attention.
Holy crap, that's a pretty good ad.
I was at a neighborhood 4th of July gathering, and several of my Democratic neighbors mentioned being anxious for '08. When I mentioned Smith though, they all said "oh, he's really not bad for a Republican."
We have to make sure people understand that his actions do not match his rhetoric. When push comes to shove, he usually votes with Bush and very much against Democratic values. I hope we can bring the choice and environmental organizations into this fight.
GREAT AD! I love it.
Man, someone should put this up on YouTube if it's not going to run on newschannel 8.
I don' t see how the war issue will ever be used effectively against Smith. He is making it very clear that if the war is still going on next year, then he is going to position himself as the peace candidate. He is not going to let any Democrat out-peace him. By the time of the election, he will have over a year long string of votes and pronouncements against the war. That will be enough to satisfy most Oregonians.
Trying to use his flip-flop on the war against him will also boomerang. His simple reply will be: I pretty much voted the same way as Hillary Clinton and John Edwards on all important votes on the war - we all supported it initially, but later changed.
How are you going to respond to that?
The McCain endorsement will be a non-issue as it is becoming apparent that McCain will not be on the Republican ticket in 2008. He will be forgotten.
Smith should be beatable next year, but not on the war issue.
