Smith Against Oregonians on Choice
Although Oregonians overwhelmingly respect a woman’s right to choose, Gordon Smith wants to give women zero control over their bodies.
Incredibly, Smith has voted against reaffirming Roe vs. Wade and against allowing overseas military facilities to provide privately-funded abortions for women who are in the military or are military dependents.
Yes, that’s right. Gordon Smith wants to tell women in uniform, on foreign soil protecting our country’s freedoms, what they can and can’t do with their bodies.
He seems to care more about the rights of those who break the law and use violence to oppose a woman’s right to choose. In 2005, Smith voted to allow violent protestors, including anti-abortion activists, to escape court-ordered fines or judgments by filing for bankruptcy protection.
For his dismal efforts, Smith has earned a 15 percent score from NARAL Pro-Choice America for his 2006 voting record. Their June column delivers the real story on Smith’s record.
The man who talks about freedom and choice in Iraq (and continues to vote to fund the war), won’t fight for a woman’s right to choose in his home state.

Smith isn't listening - and does not care.
During the major Anniversary of the US Supreme Court Decision called Roe v Wade - that affirms a woman's right to choose for her own body - I called Senator Smith's Portland office and arranged to deliver 3 documentary films on abortion so the Senator and his staff could better understand the impact of choosing the timing of motherhood, and how critical access to health care is for women and to our families.
With permission of the film Director, I went to Smith's office to personally deliver the 3 documentary films that had already won over 45 awards. They also have been run on television on all 50 states, including Utah.
Sadly, no acknowledgement was ever made by Senator Smith, nor any Staffer, about these high-quality films. Nor were they returned. Were they ever viewed?
Beware, Senator Smith and his Staff just might view your life and viewpoints similarly - as so much trash, not worthy of a listen. Respecting your life (and dialogue on public policy) as a precious gift is the responsibility of an Elected Offical - and Smith fails on both.
PLEASE, Earl, or Kitz, you have consistently stood up for women's rights and engaged public dialogue - - run for the US Senate.
We need you - now.
