Gordon Smith: Environmentalist?
Judging by his voting record, Gordon Smith’s backyard must be an overdeveloped, smoggy, oily, toxic mess.
The man simply does not care about the environment.
Smith has voted to drill in ANWR, to protect a $5 billion big oil tax windfall, against reducing greenhouse gas emissions, against a proposal to reduce America’s dependency on foreign oil by 40% over the next 20 years and against proposals to clean up SuperFund sites.
For votes cast in 2006, Smith received just a 14% rating from the League of Conservation Voters. Smith’s lifetime score from the LCV is just 26%.
Smith’s environmental contributions rank with the Exxon Valdez.
How would you rank Smith’s environmental gifts to Oregon?

According to OpenSecrets.org, the industry which gave Smith the most campaign support during 1995-2000 (he joined the Senate in 1997) was the timber industry. The timber industry slipped to #5 for the 2001-2006 profile, but the damage had already been done, and Smith was still the top Senate recipient for timber money for 2005-6.
It is also worth noting that, during the 2002 election, Gordon Smith benefitted from another famed anti-environmentalist... Dick Cheney. The vice-president circumvented both law and science in the now-infamous Klamath River basin incident, which murdered thousands of federally endangered salmon. For more information see:

I want Senator Gordon Smith to support the Copper-Salmon Wilderness, in southwest Oregon.(Curry County) He has been silent on this issue and need. I feel the Oregon public deserves a Senator who will be vocal and supportive of wilderness protection in our state. Has Senator Smith worked against Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma in his bid to derail the expansion of the Hood River Wilderness?
The Republican fols are silent on the most important issues of our state. This will be their downfall.
