Even Smith’s Supporters Don't Believe Him

This says it all.

Here’s what Gordon Smith supporter and Bend Republican Dave Eaton said about our junior U.S. Senator:

“It’s the concern that he doesn’t really stand for anything other than his own re-election.”
(The Bulletin, 11-27-07)

What do you think Eaton is referring to?

1. Fact: Smith told Oregonians during his 2002 campaign he would oppose drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He got elected, and then ended up voting to drill in ANWR.

“Smith has been running spots in Portland that emphasize...his opposition to oil drilling in the arctic wilderness.”
(The Oregonian, 10-10-02)

2. Fact: Smith has proven he can’t be trusted on the Iraq War. After all, he said he would oppose the Iraq War only after the landslide 2006 elections, and after polls showed Americans no longer supported Republicans or the Iraq War. Until the elections that swept his party out of power, he staunchly defended the war and President Bush’s handling of the war.

And even after he said he could not support the Iraq War, he’s voted four times in 2007 to keep troops in Iraq and prolong the war. The Oregonian, in their February 10, 2007 editorial, said Smith has been “here, there, everywhere” on the war.

3. Fact: Oregon’s second largest newspaper noted this year that Smith is “willing to bend and selectively omit the facts to justify ideologically driven political positions.”

We need to defeat this guy and kick him out of the Senate. He obviusly cannot be trusted to vote the way "we the people" elected him to.
