New Poll: Smith at 33% Job Approval, 30% Re-elect

We are almost exactly one year away from Election Day 2008 and Gordon Smith is in trouble. According to a new poll from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, only 30 percent of Oregonians will vote to re-elect him.

From the DSCC Memo:

“A new poll taken by Grove Insight shows that Oregon Senator Gordon Smith’s job approval rating among likely voters has plummeted to 33%, with a full 49% disapproving of his performance in office. Furthermore, only 30% of Oregonians say they will vote to re-elect Smith, with 41% saying they will vote for or consider someone else. Despite spending the past year trying to disguise his record of supporting George Bush 90 percent of the time, the poll shows Smith with the lowest job approval rating of any Senator in the country running for re-election. Clearly, Oregonians are not buying Smith’s election year makeover and are ready for a change.”

I don't know a lot about Gordon Smith. That may be because he doesn't seem to get his head up high enough to show up on the radar screen. BUT, you live by the record, you die by it as well. If Sen. Smith thought that writing President Bush a blank check with his votes was the smart thing to do when Bush was riding the crest of post 911 sentiment, then he needs to fess up when the biodegradable composting material hits the fan.
And I hope his family's company is at least taking steps to legalize or naturalize the illegal aliens who were working for the family business, instead of just exploiting their situation.

TAKE A LOOK AT "STOP GORDON SMITH". HE TALKED THE GOOD TALK WHEN HE THOUGHT IT WOULD BENEFIT HIMSELF, AND IN THE END HE STOOD BY BUSH EVERY TIME. THE COUNTRY IS GREATLY IN NEED OF CHANGE, OREGON IS IN NEED OF CHANGE; REPLACE GORDON SMITH WITH A PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRATIC SENATOR IN 2008. IF YOU DON'T LIVE IN OREGON AND KNOW SOMEONE WHO DOES, SEND THIS ON TO THEM. WE NEED PEOPLE WHO SUPPORT THE CONSTITUTION, THE VALUES THIS COUNTRY WAS BUILT ON AND THE PEOPLE, WHO PUT THEM IN OFFICE, NOT THE WHIMS OF THE PRESIDENT OR "STOOGES FOR BUSH" CLUB IN WASHINGTON D.C. Today the senate voted to confirm Mukasey as the new Attorney General.

Many Senators opposed Mukasey's nomination because Mukasey would not denounce the use of waterboarding, which is clearly torture and therefore illegal under both the U.S. Constitution and our agreements including the Geneva Convention. This was not a strictly partisan issue: some outspoken Republicans including Senator John McCain have also been clear on their position that waterboarding is torture and torture is illegal.

So how did Oregon's Senators vote? Ron Wyden voted against Mukasey's confirmation.

Gordon Smith voted for Mukasey, and by extension for the Bush/Cheney authorization of torture in the form of waterboarding.

Even when he has cover from other conservatives, Smith goes with the Bush administration and their policies. Torture is not just wrong because it's immoral and ineffective as a technique; it's also harmful to our national security because it's a recruitment tool for our enemies and it diminishes our moral authority even among allies.

Oregonians don't believe in torture, and we don't believe Gordon Smith should represent us in the Senate any longer.

I'd like to think those poll numbers are accurate but appear suspect given voter registration in this state, the large number of voters who act on "belief" and what they wish the world to be, rather than what it is; the sponsor of the poll (DSCC); and the near-invariable experience of races tightening as an election date approaches. Anyone who thinkd this will be a cakewalk is likely to wake up the "morning after" and find G. Smith still in the Senate.

If you want a change you're going to have to do a lot of work and spend some money as well.
