Say Anything Senator Greeted By Protesters In Medford. Answers With More Empty Rhetoric.
Stop Gordon Smith Campaign activists and other protesters greeted Gordon Smith during his visit to Medford yesterday, criticizing him for saying anything to get re-elected. They focused on his Iraq War record.
Watch the local TV coverage of the protest.
Rather than seriously discussing the issue, the Say Anything senator repeated more parsed, empty rhetoric in response to the protesters.
“I substantially agree with them. I want our troops home as fast as they can come home safely. And I think we are on the cusp of a way home. And the sooner the better as far as I’m concerned.”
(KTVL, 1-16-08)
We’ve heard this kind of empty rhetoric before from the Say Anything Senator.
Smith's Record
Although over the summer Smith boasted to columnist George Will he would have a dozen Republican U.S. Senators by September 2007 helping to get troops out of Iraq, he’s tallied zero support for removing troops.
And last year, only after America kicked Smith’s Republican Party out of office and said no to the Iraq War did Smith say he would oppose it.
Smith has been “here, there, everywhere” on the war according to The Oregonian’s February 10, 2007 editorial.
In fact, in 2007, even after he said he would oppose the war, he has actually voted five times to keep troops in Iraq and prolong the conflict. Oregon's other U.S. Senator, Ron Wyden, voted opposite Smith on all five of those votes.
“Every time Gordon Smith speaks he erodes his credibility," DPO Communications Director Marc Siegel said. "The more you examine his record, the more you understand why editorial writers and Smith’s own allies and supporters have questioned his accuracy and authenticity.”

Thanks for all the assistance the Stop Gordon Smith Campaign gives to all the groups who are protesting the very untrustworthy "Say Anything" senator. We members of Citizens for Peace & Justice of Medford have protested Smith for telling Oregonians one thing (e.g. that he's against the war) and voting the opposite in Congress. We all need to take to the streets let all Oregonians know that Smith is a fraud. If you live in the Rogue Valley, please join us. See www.medfordcpj.org for more info.
Great work by the protestors. Smith is such a two-faced phony. Based on his comments, he really sounds like he's providing strict oversight in DC - NOT!
Imagine how many community centers, etc. we could build in Oregon if we redeployed some of the $12 BILLION we spend in Iraq every month. And he's boasting that he secured $350,000 for Medford. Wow... I'm awestruck by the fact that he's such a spendthrift when it comes to the Iraq boondoggle & such a miser when it comes to helping his actual constituents.
Oregon can do better.
Smith isn't as bright as you would think. I knew Hatfield and was close to Packwood. I became a Democrat and still tried to get to know Smith. Apparently he thinks Democrats should know even if they support a Repulican, you need to invite them to meetings and show some interest in the other side of issues.
In June a group of us had an appointment made by our sponsor with Smith and we met with his staff. It was afternoon and I think Smith was on the golf course on a sunny humid day. I tried talking to him about abortion one time. He showed some interest but he cut our talk short. The way he has walked around DC holding GW's tail for him, makes me think he is stupid politically. He can't seem to do anything right. He doesn't look like a religious fanatic and Mormons usually aren't like that but he followed the fanatic religious right measures of the senate leaders. Would you belie I got a mailer asking for money this week. I have written notes suggesting I was never a supporter of his work, maybe I supported him but not what he stood for. No I'm supporting Merkley. If we get him into office, he will be everything Widen, not just another ugle face, ever thought of being.
