Trust?

In Gordon Smith’s latest email to supporters he claims that -

“Gordon Smith has a record of independent minded leadership Oregonians have come to know, respect and trust.”

But after 12 years in office, Oregonians have learned they can’t trust Smith – especially in an election year.

Example One:

During his 2002 campaign Smith ran TV ads claiming his opposition to drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Smith earned re-election and voted to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Example Two:

After boasting about his coordination with Dick Cheney and the White House during his 2002 campaign – including running TV ads on the subject – Gordon Smith backtracked in 2007 on his coordination with the White House on diverting Klamath River water that decimated coastal fishing economies.

“Does Gordon Smith regret campaigning on false promises and misleading statements in 2002, or does he plan on making similar disingenuous claims in 2008?” DPO Chair Meredith Wood Smith asked. “Oregon's newspapers have already cited Gordon Smith for contradictions and fact bending. His own supporters have publicly doubted his credibility. Gordon Smith can pledge to reverse course and campaign honestly in 2008, or he can continue his deceptive 2002 behavior. Which will it be?"
