Smith And Bush
The DSCC began running a new television ad this month highlighting Gordon Smith's record of voting in lockstep with George W. Bush. From Bush's tax breaks for the wealthiest to his plans to privatize Social Security, Smith has joined Bush in working against the priorities of average Oregonians for years.

Democrats Highlight Scary Truth: Smith, Bush And Republicans Want to Outlaw A Woman’s Right to Choose
Protest And Mailer Educates Voters About What’s At Stake In This Election
Right outside Republican U.S. Senator Gordon Smith’s evening fundraiser, Oregonians passed out a new mail piece from the DPO to educate voters about Smith’s effort to outlaw a woman’s right to choose.
The mailer is part of a broad effort to highlight the importance of protecting reproductive rights in this election. Hundreds of thousands of mail pieces will let voters know that if you’re pro-choice, Gordon Smith is the wrong choice.
Pro-choice supporters gathered outside The Heathman Hotel in downtown Portland tonight to distribute the mailer, hold signs declaring “Smith Opposes Roe vs. Wade,” “Smith is Anti-Choice” and “www.StopGordonSmith.com.”
As the mailer states, Smith, President Bush and their fellow Republicans have worked to:
-Pack the Supreme Court with extreme, anti-choice judges.
[Vote 245, 9/25/05; Vote 2, 1/31/06]
-Criminalize abortions even if the health of the mother is at stake.
[Vote 402, 10/21/03]
-Make abortion illegal.
[USA Today, 4/16/06; Oregon Right To Life, 2008; Vote 48, 3/12/03]
While representing arguably the most pro-choice state in the country, Smith has compiled one of the most aggressive and consistent anti-choice records in the U.S. Senate.
Oregon voters deserve to know who supports a woman’s right to choose, and who wants to ban that right. If you’re pro-choice, Gordon Smith and the Republicans are the wrong choice.

Smith Supports Privatization
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee began running two new television ads on Gordon Smith’s support for Social Security privatization and what that could mean to Oregonians given market turmoil on Wall Street. Smith has voted repeatedly for privatizing Social Security and praised George Bush’s privatization proposal, which would have risked Social Security funds in financial markets.

Our Wallets! New TV Ad
With Gordon Smith airing attack ads that have been called “desperate” and “ridiculous” by Oregon newspapers, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee released a new television ad today exposing Smith’s votes to spend billions in Iraq and on tax breaks for big oil companies while raising the national debt to $9 trillion.
“Gordon Smith can’t defend his record so he’s resorted to attack ads that distort the facts,” DSCC spokesman Matthew Miller said. “Gordon Smith has run the most negative campaign in the country, but millions of dollars in attack ads won’t prevent Oregonians from rejecting his election year makeover.”
The ad can be viewed here:

SMITH DELIVERS FOR BIG OIL, NOT FOR OREGON
DSCC TV Ad shows what Smith’s tax breaks for big oil could mean for average Oregon families.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee released a new television ad today showing how the $18 billion that Gordon Smith gave in tax breaks to Big Oil could help average Oregon families – 407 bags of groceries, 298 tanks of gas, or two years of college tuition.
The DSCC recently launched the website www.BoughtByBigOil.com to expose Republican Senators’ support for policies that leave Americans paying at the pump while oil companies bring in record profits.
“The oil executives who fill Gordon Smith’s campaign coffers with cash have gotten huge tax breaks, while average Oregon families are left with higher prices at the pump,” DSCC spokesman Matthew Miller said. “Oregon families need help, but Gordon Smith is busy helping Big Oil instead.”

DSCC Television Ad Links Smith’s Support For Big Oil To High Gas Prices
As gas prices continue to soar, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee began airing a new television advertisement today highlighting the hundreds of thousands of dollars Gordon Smith has taken from Big Oil and his votes to give the industry billions of dollars in special tax breaks. The new ad comes as the DSCC also launched a new website www.BoughtByBigOil.com to expose Republican Senators’ support for policies that leave Americans paying higher gas prices while oil companies rack up hundreds of billions in profits.
“Gordon Smith’s campaign has been financed by the big oil companies that are making record profits at the expense of average Oregonians,” DSCC spokesman Matthew Miller said. “With hundreds of thousands of dollars of Big Oil money lining Gordon Smith’s campaign coffers, it’s no wonder he thinks they deserve billions in special tax breaks, but he is clearly out of touch with his constituents.”

Who Will Stand Up To Bush’s Attack On Women’s Health?
While Jeff Merkley, Ron Wyden and Barack Obama challenge the Bush Administration, Gordon Smith stays silent.
The Democratic Party of Oregon released this video today to encourage Republican U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith to join Jeff Merkley and Democratic U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Barack Obama in protecting a woman’s right to choose.
Merkley and 28 U.S. Senators are battling the Bush Administration’s push to radically limit women’s access to contraception.
Merkley is gathering supporters to oppose the plan and encouraging thousands of people to speak out.
Wyden and Obama are two of the 28 U.S. Senators urging the Bush Administration to drop the proposal.
While Merkley, Wyden and Obama are standing up for women’s health, Gordon Smith, who has long opposed a woman’s right to choose, is noticeably silent on this issue.
“A spokeswoman for Smith did not return an email or two phone calls asking for Smith's comment on the proposed rule change affecting abortion. UPDATE ON FRIDAY: Lindsay Gilbride, spokeswoman for Smith, said there was ‘no real evidence it could be a reality ... so at this point, we aren’t going to speculate on it.’"

NEW VIDEO: DPO responds to Smith's latest negative campaign ad.
Gordon Smith and Jeff Merkley come from two very different places and fight for two very different things.
Smith favors tax cuts for the wealthy and big oil companies and denies tax cuts to the middle class. Now he is running the most negative campaign in the country, deceiving voters about Merkley’s record cutting taxes for working families.
Lending A Hand
Watch this video and see how Gordon Smith has opposed tax cuts for child care, college tuition, health insurance and small businesses.
At the same time he’s voted against middle class tax relief, been a rubber stamp for George Bush and delivered massive tax breaks for the wealthy and for Big Oil.
Negative Campaign
Gordon Smith is running the most negative campaign in the country. Yes, in the country.
How do we know?
Well, he’s run more negative ads than any other Republican up for reelection.
He was the only Republican in the country airing negative ads until just last week when U.S. Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas began airing negative ads.
He was the first Republican in the country to air negative ads attacking his Democratic challenger.
He was the only Republican Senator to air negative attack ads in a Democratic primary.
“For years Gordon Smith and George Bush have delivered tax cuts for Big Oil and opposed middle class tax cuts for Oregon’s working families,” DPO Chair Meredith Wood Smith said. “Now, Gordon Smith runs the most negative campaign in the country and distorts Jeff Merkley’s record. Jeff Merkley led the fight for tax relief for working families and restored fiscal responsibility in Salem. Gordon Smith should stop the Karl Rove politics and follow Merkley’s lead.”

Merkley Campaign Launches Smith Pop Up Video
Jeff Merkley's campaign for U.S. Senate is launching its first Smith Pop Up Video called "Get It (In an Election Year)," featuring Gordon Smith, lovely music, and all the things he is supposed to say in an election year. Smith's original ad is currently running on television statewide.
Take a look:
Smith says he thinks independently, but he has voted with George Bush 90 percent of the time.
Smith says he is bipartisan, but he has cancelled out Ron Wyden's vote nearly 1,700 times.
Smith says he will work with a Democratic President, but he has endorsed John "100 years in Iraq" McCain.
Gordon Smith has been a "rubber stamp" on every important initiative of the Bush Administration.

New TV Ad: Smith Stands With Special Interests, Not With Oregon
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee today responded to Gordon Smith’s attack ads against Democratic Senate candidates with a new television advertisement exposing Smith’s support for tax breaks for special interests that ship jobs overseas, big oil companies, and the wealthy instead of help for Oregon families.
“Instead of supporting Oregon families at a time when they need it most, Gordon Smith stands up for the special interests that ship jobs overseas and keep gas prices through the roof,” DSCC spokesman Matthew Miller said. “Gordon Smith knows he’ll lose a campaign that centers on his record in Washington, so he’s already started running personal attacks rather than debate his history of siding with the special interests.”

New Video: Smith's Old Tune
Tired of Gordon Smith’s tune?
So are we.
That’s why we released this video today on Gordon Smith’s:
-Voting with President Bush 90 percent of the time
-Opposition to U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden’s bill to combat global warming
-Opposition to a woman’s right to choose
“Gordon Smith is out of tune with Oregon’s interests,” DPO Chair Meredith Wood Smith said. “He has been criticized by Oregon newspapers and his own supporters for his contradictions, fact bending and inaccuracies. He votes with President Bush 90 percent of the time, opposes U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden’s effort to combat climate change and does not believe in a woman’s right to choose. Gordon Smith sings from the same page as the special interests and remains out of tune with the interests of Oregon’s working families.”

New Video: Hold Smith Accountable
Gordon Smith will say anything to win re-election.
He’s proven he can’t be trusted on the Iraq War.
It’s time to hold him accountable.
Here’s how:
-Forward this video on to five people you know who oppose the Iraq War and support accountability in government.
-Attend one of our protests of Gordon Smith on Wednesday, Dec. 5 in Bend, Eugene, Medford, Pendleton or Portland.
The video and protests come one year after Smith's speech from the floor of the U.S. Senate that he opposed the Iraq War, and only days after we learned 3,500 more Oregonians will head out to Iraq. Smith has continued voting to keep troops in Iraq and prolong the war and has proven he will say anything to win re-election. Hold Smith accountable on Wednesday.
Hint: Be sure to watch to end of video to find out how you can help.

We are almost exactly one year away from Election Day 2008. One year from now, will voters choose a candidate who will stand for Oregon, or with President Bush?
“A year from now, Oregonians will have the opportunity to choose change or more of the same,” DPO Chair Meredith Wood Smith said. “They can choose more of someone who has stood by President Bush’s conservative U.S. Supreme Court, his Iraq War and his Republican agenda. Or, they can choose someone who will stand up for Oregon. I hope everyone who views this video will sign up to help us defeat Gordon Smith and send a progressive U.S. Senator to Washington, DC.”

Red Senator In A Blue State
In less than 10 minutes, Secretary of State Bill Bradbury declares why Oregonians should not be fooled by Gordon Smith’s campaign rhetoric.
Smith has a history of campaigning as Blue in Oregon, but voting Red in Washington, DC, Bradbury says.
Bradbury ran against Smith in 2002. He says Smith’s 2008 campaign conversions remind him of their 2002 contest.
In this October 5, 2007 speech at the DPO’s Oregon Summit in Sunriver, Bradbury addressed Smith’s:
-opposition to pulling troops out of Iraq
-dangerous environmental record supporting drilling in ANWR, opposing alternative energy and earning atrocious grades from environmental interests
-40 percent score from Disabled American Veterans
-90 percent voting record with President Bush
